Among the priorities of the U.S. Embassy in Athens for strengthening U.S.-Greece relations is to make Greece a priority destination for American students of all backgrounds and all academic interests. The devotion to education of the current U.S. Ambassador in Athens, Greek-American George J. Tsunis, has enabled him to advance the cause during his tenure.
He was delighted to note in his interview with The National Herald which follows, “Greece welcomes over 4,000 American students every year for study abroad programs.” The Ambassador also emphasizes that, “we have seen an increase in the number of U.S. universities bringing student groups to Greece in areas such as business, entrepreneurship, environmental research and many more.”
The National Herald: With the rapid advances in technology and Greece’s growing innovation sector, how can American students benefit academically from studying in Greece, particularly in fields like STEM and entrepreneurship?
Ambassador George J. Tsunis: Over the past few years, Greece has made remarkable strides in attracting and nurturing investment (including from the United States) across its technology sector – from startups to data centers, from research and development hubs to technology incubators. As a result, the country is emerging as a key regional technology hub, positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in Southeast Europe. Greece welcomes over 4,000 American students every year for study abroad programs, including in the fields of STEM and entrepreneurship. The continuously climbing number of incoming U.S. students is a testament to the positive impact that these programs have on them academically, personally, and professionally. U.S. companies have also placed their vote of confidence in Greece’s student talent in STEM fields, as tech giants like Microsoft and AWS have invested in major data centers in the country. All these developments make Greece an attractive, emerging environment of great potential for academic exchanges in the hard sciences, for both students and researchers.
