“Two fires broke out at the same time in the area of Palaiovarvasaina, in the municipality of Pyrgos,” Ilia’s deputy regional governor, Vassilis Giannopoulos, said in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, adding that “a few minutes later, another fire broke out near the entrance of Ancient Olympia, in the area of Fanaras,” ANA reports.
According to Fire Department sources, “the fire in Paleobarvasaina, specifically in the Karoutes area, seems to have been contained, while the second fire is still in progress,” the deputy regional governor added.
Strong firefighting forces assisted by airplanes and helicopters are operating in order to control the fires and not threaten residential areas.
