Actions to support cultural heritage in Greece totaling 274 million euros within the framework of regional programs and the Just Transition fund were announced by the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Iliana Ivanova on Wednesday, ANA reports.
Ivanova was responding to a question from the European People’s Party MEP Maria Spyraki. Her response said a sum of 27 million euros has been allocated to ensure the preservation of historic buildings through the “Diatiro” initiative for Greece.
In her question to the European Commission, Spyraki raised the “major important issue of the protection of 200 imposing buildings, an important architectural heritage, most of which are located on Vassilissis Olgas street in Thessaloniki.” She had underlined that “these neoclassical buildings are in danger of collapse due to the high costs of their maintenance,” and she called for European funds to rescue them, as stated in her communication.
