The 17th Annual International Festival of the Aegean takes place July 9-26 in Ermoupolis, Syros, Greece, and features a special tribute to Maria Callas on July 23 in honor of the centennial of her birth.
Renowned Greek-American conductor, producer, and impresario Peter Tiboris founded the Festival in 2005 to bring together world-class artists from dozens of countries to perform for music lovers from Europe and all over the world. In 2011, the Festival was named Best Cultural Organization Operating in the Wider Region of Greece by the Awards Committee of Music Critics of the Union of Greek Theatre and Music Critics, based in Athens, Greece. In December 2014, the Festival was awarded the Gina Bachauer Award as Festival of the Year.
Tiboris’ wife, Finnish soprano Eilana Lappalainen is the General and Artistic Director of the Festival.
The Festival kicks off Sunday, July 9, at 5 PM, at the Della Grazia City Hall Gardens, free and open to the public.
The Festival Premiere features Chamber Music at the Apollo Theater in Ermoupoli on Friday, July 14. The Chamber Music continues at the Apollo Theater on Saturday, July 15, at 8:30 PM.
Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor will be presented Sunday, July 16; Tuesday, July 18, Thursday, July 20; and Saturday, July 22, at 8:30 PM, at the Apollo Theater
The White Nights Concert featuring Nordic Music will be held Monday, July 19, at 8:30 PM, at the Apollo Theater while the same venue will host the Grand Orchestra Concert on Friday, July 21, also at 8:30 PM.
The Opera Gala: A Tribute to Maria Callas takes place on Sunday, July 23, at 9 PM, at The Plateia / City Hall and is free and open to the public.
On Monday, July 24, 11 AM, Liederabend will be performed at the Apollo Theater, and on Wednesday, July 26, 8:30 PM the GOS Opera Gala will also be held at the Apollo Theater.
Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi will be presented on Tuesday, July 25, at 8:30 PM at the Apollo Theater.
